GAP FILLER STATIONS - NE ONTARIO
RECONNAISSANCE REPORT

TIMMINS SITE:

  1. EH McLean and A Taylor arrived at Timmins, Ontario, at 10:30 am, from Folyet, Ontario, by car on 7 August, 1959, and left by TCA at 6:30 pm the same day.

  2. Timmins is a large, well organized mining community, served by the Ontario Northland Railway and TCA. A 67 mile road link connects it with Folyet on the transcontinental line of the CPR. Work has commenced on connecting Folyet with Chapleau by road, so that eventually one may travel by car from Timmins directly to Sault Ste Marie, rather than using Highways No 11 and 17.

The Ontario Dept of Lands & Forests maintain extensive facilities at Timmins under Chief Ranger Charles Grey, and Acting Chief Ranger Ian Stewart. The instructions supplied for reaching the site are substantially correct.

  3. The Site is located at an 80 ft high forestry tower on top of Mount Jamieson, also called Mount Kamiskotia. It is about 200 ft south of the boundary between Godfrey and Jamieson Township. the ground is predominently outcrop, covered with sparse brush and blueberries. Twelve years ago, the area was swept by a forest fire and even the forestry tower was destroyed. Mr Dan McCrory occupies the tower and a cabin at the base of the hill. His water supply is from a 20 ft dug well by the hut and is satisfactory. It is believed that the site lies on patented mining claims.

A one ft square monument was observed approximately 50' from the tower in a northerly direction, bearing a bronze plug marked "Geodetic Survey of Canada. Triangulation Station." No number.

  4. A good all-weather road regularly plowed in winter runs within half a mile of the site. It will be possible to connect this road with the site by approaching the hill from the west.

  5. A good single phase power line is at present being constructed from the Timmins-Folyet Road along the road to lake Kamiskotia past the site. These poles are heavy, and designed to carry additional wires. Discussing this with Mr Grandbois of Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission, 128 Pine Street, Timmins, it was learned that by adding additional wires, the line could supply the current required for DND purposes. It was felt that HEPC would bear the cost of this additional construction up to the point where the line left the Kamiskotia road for the site.

  6. Telephone - DL & F did at one time own a two-wire line from the Timmins-Folyet Road along the Kamiskotia Road into the site. This line is now disused, and has been sold to Ontario Northland Communications for $1,000.00. Information on the use of this line and the supply of two circuits can be obtained from Mr EA Frith, Ontario Northland Communications, North Bay, Ontario

  7. Water - can be obtained from a well to be located at the base of the hill.

  8. Materials - Sand, gravel, and granular fill appear plentiful in the area, and there is a good stock of building materials in Timmins.

  9. Accommodations - There are numerous motels, hotels and boarding houses in Timmins for temporary accommodation.Estimated cost of construction is as follows:

    Site preparation and fencing$2,000.00
    Water well and pump house800.00
    Septic tank and drains800.00
    oil storage facilities1,000.00
