This was termed an excellent exercise for close co-ordination between Raid Masters. The only tactical instructions given by this HQ was the direction from which the attacks were to be made. All attack areas were co-ordinated between Raid Masters. Total results were 4 MA’s, 9 MI’s and 2 aborts. Exercise Cueball IV was held on 20 Feb. Simulated DEW Line penetrations were received at 1745Z. Only 8 aircraft from each of Bagotville and St. Hubert participated in the exercise; this due to heavy commitment at each of the fighter bases. Aircraft were scrambled 9 minutes prior to actual Mid-Canada Line penetrations and equally divided between CAP areas Yankee and Zulu. Of the 8 aircraft committed to CAP area one aircraft from Bagotville aborted in the air due to loss of canopy. Mogul 1 flown by S/L Allison OC 413 Squadron was escorted by his wingman. No further incident developed. Of the remaining Bagotville aircraft 4 obtained MA’s and one obtained an MI. St. Hubert results were as follows: 6 MA’s, 2 MI’s and 1 ground abort.

Dawn Dance IV exercise was planned to take place on 12 Mar from 0515Z to 0715Z, however bad weather forced cancellation of the exercise. Dawn Dance V was then scheduled to occur on the 23 Apr with the alternate of the 24. 18 Mar 58 – Exercise Shake Up simulated MCL penetration of B-29 targets were received. During the exercise Snowshoe received handover of three sections of 3 F-89Hs. These aircraft obtained results of 5 MA’s and 4 MI’s due to controller error. 4 CF-100s were scrambled from St. Hubert under Crystal control on a Pinetree pickup with results of 6 MA’s, 5 MI’s. All MI’s due to evasive action taken by T-33 targets. Another exercise Shake Up took place on the 25 Mar using 3 T-33 aircraft as targets. On this exercise 9 F-89Js were committed in 3 pairs and 1 section of 3. Results – 7 MA’s 2 MI’s due to AEF. Ten CF-100 were committed with 4 MA’s, 1 abort, 3 MI’s due to safety. It was apparent from this exercise that F-89J aircraft should be scrambled 20 minutes prior to MCL penetration.

April 1958

Overflies – During the month of April, 40 B-47’s. 14 B-52s and 4 RAF Valiants overflew Canada. These overflew under the callsigns of Grandville, Leeway, Cow Bell and Canteen. No tactical action was taken. The Russian TU-104 was planned to fly from Moscow to Vancouver on 14 Apr. During the month of April 4 sets of F-86 proceeded to St. Hubert for the RCAF USAF cross training programme. All 16 F-86 participated.

Exercises – Exercise Shake Up, 1 Apr, took place using 3 T-33 as targets. They were first deployed to Bagotville with take off scheduled for 1440Z, then at 20 minute intervals. Results by F-89aircraft were 3 MA’s and 3 MI’s. The F-102s under Crystal control obtained 3 MA’s and 3 MI’s, target fading prior to intercept. Another Exercise Shake Up was carried out on 9 Apr. The timing of scrambles was good for the F-89J and the airborne orders for the F-102 were based on expected Pinetree pickup were not considered feasible due to the short endurance of the aircraft. The results: 11 MA’s and 9 MI’s obtained jointly by USAF and RCAF aircraft. Exercise Dawn Dance V planned for the 23 Apr was postponed until the 21 May, this due to heavy operational commitment in 1 Sector. On 23 Apr, a Faker exercise was run through 1 Sector using as target CF-100, the Belgium Force aircraft. The purpose of this exercise was to provide controllers with practice in United States Air Force fighter attack procedures and to develop tactics for the integrating attacks by Canadian and American aircraft. All attacks were to be done north of the 46th degree of latitude. However, a last minute failure of Parent Search Radar and Oxygen contamination in the F-102s of Rome nullified the exercise for tactical purposes. During the exercise B-52 Cartman aircraft carried out S Band jamming in the Crystal area thereby offering experience in controlling through strength 2 jamming. The Faker force encountered a jet stream from 180 degrees at 180 knots, 43,000 instead of the forecast jet stream of 250 at 50 knots planned at 37,000 feet. As a result, the Pinetree pickup following the MCL penetration was approximately 50 minutes late.

ECM – ECM was conducted against all units in 1 Sector during the month by the C-119 and the CF-100. In addition AI jamming was provided for St. Hubert and Bagotville crews by the CF-100.

Promotion 1 Apr – Effective 1 Apr 58 the following airmen were promoted:

To Sergeant:

Cpl. Brunelle

On 25 and 26 Apr, S/L AA Sherlock, 1 ADCC Senior Controller, proceeded to Station Parent for a Staff Visit.

May 1958

Overflies – During the month of May, 50 B-47s, 45 B-52s and 4 RAF Canberra overflew 1 Sector. No tactical action was undertaken on the B-52s and B-47s. These overflew under the callsigns of Safeway, Reflex Action, Snowfall, Ajax, Jolly, and June Baby. U-2 aircraft activity was again prevalent throughout the month. On the 3rd May, 4 RAF Canberra overflew the Sector.

Exercises – On 7 May, 17 CF-100 Jump Moat aircraft proceeded overseas from Ottawa. On the 19 May dry runs began using the RAF Valiant aircraft, callsign for the exercise Burnt Cork. This called for the RAF Valiant to take off from Bagotville, make a number of MCL penetrations, and proceed southward. RCAF aircraft interceptors were used.

ECM runs were conducted by the Valiant aircraft during these exercises. ECM was also provided by the C-119 from 104 K Flight against Station St. Sylvestre on the 8 and 9 May and B-52 carried out Cartman exercises on the 20 May.

Exercise Shake Up on 6 May. We received simulated DEW Line penetration from COC showing two tracks approximately longitude 7300 west. Airborne orders for 2 pairs F-89J from Rome to CAP Y and 2 pair to CAP area Z were issued at 1403 both based on 20 minutes prior to MCL. Two pairs of CF-100 were scrambled from Bagotville for an Ident mission prior to the F-89J attack. The CF-100 has one ID MA and MI AEF while the F-89s had 3 MA’s, 1 MI due to late commitment. The St. Hubert aircraft obtained 2 MA’s and 2 MI’s due to evasive target turn. The targets turned south at 5030 north not allowing enough tracking time to make an identification and attack with Genie aircraft with adequate spacing. The targets showed IFF mode 3 same as the fighters, thus confusing the scope picture.

Exercise Dawn Dance IV took place on 21 May. The Faker force comprised 8 CF-100 aircraft simulating a mass raid splitting and extreme radar coverage. A Faker formation was 4 cells of 2 aircraft per call. The raid penetrated from the northern tip of Lake Mistassini on two diverging tracks through the centre of 1 Sector. 20 CF-100 aircraft were committed against the raid. 8 aircraft from Bagotville, 6 from Ottawa and 6 from St. Hubert. Fighters operating single obtained the following results: 15 MI’s, 2 MA’s and 3 aborts. Broadcast Control facilities were used by Station Lac St. Denis, Mont Apica, St. Sylvestre and control was by VHF for RCAF Station Parent.

Exercise Cue Ball VII occurred on 30 May. Faker force comprised of 4 tracks penetrating centre of Sector at high altitude on a broad front. Fighter aircraft assigned to the exercise were restricted by controllers strength. 8 aircraft from St. Hubert, half under Crystal, remainder under Snowshoe and 8 aircraft from Bagotville half under Scooter, remainder under Scabbard. USAF aircraft were not available for this exercise due to holiday and stand down. Results were 11 MI’s, 3 MA’s and 1 abort.
