Primary equipment: AN/FPS-3(C) –1– Primary Search; Mark X (SIF) AN/GPX-7A –1.

Command & Administration:

The manning of the Administrative Section has been consistent with UMD requirements and there were no shortages.

During this quarter, the section concentrated on preparing records and files for the coming calendar year. Records disposition, publications and forms management were carefully reviewed and each section was checked for proper administration by the chief clerk. Project Paper Screen was completed and new files were prepared for 1961. During this quarter, personnel records, the morning report and associated MRDR cards were screened and reviewed and sent to Goose Air Defense Sector for consolidation. Folders containing thermofax copies of AF Forms 7 and other items as required by this unit were accomplished for all airmen. Folders were made up for all officers containing thermofax copies of AF Forms 11 and other necessary documents and forms. The manning of the squadron in general was satisfactory and consistent with UMD authorizations throughout the quarter.

Communications & Electronics:

The personnel manning of the C&E Section has been consistent with UMD requirements during the quarter. The Radar Maintenance Section which was short on personnel for quite some time gained six persons during the quarter. There is presently an overage in Radar and Radio, however, this overage will be rectified shortly due to personnel in these sections approaching DEROS.

Installation of shielded cable for the closed circuit portion of the Radio Station WORM also was completed this quarter. Shielded wire for the WORM speakers was installed to prevent feed over into the telephone lines. Rewiring of the WORM console was accomplished also a classroom was set up in Tower Two to be used for formal OJT classes and additional plans were made for it to be used by the education officer for off-duty courses. All C&E equipment has been operating at peak performance. AN/GPS-T2 and Acter training devices have been off the air for six weeks, both have been placed on TDIOP status. Parts have been ordered but have not been received as of the end of this quarter. Radio Maintenance Section returned one each GRT-3 to depot for overhaul and has been taking the back-up equipment down for peaking and general alignment.

Operations:

Personnel manning has been generally consistent with UMD authorizations although a shortage of operations personnel during December was noted. At the end of the quarter, the operations section was short five spaces. This was due to the hold-over of replacement personnel at Goose Air Defense Sector for the purpose of performing details. These shortages should be alleviated as soon as personnel are released to join this unit. Manning would then be up to par except for a shortage of a 27390.

The following projects were accomplished during this quarter: Construction of a 40 x 50 inch surveillance board was completed. All equipment is operational with the exception of the SM-146 TDIOF (Power Supply Transformer) and the GPS-T2 TDIOP (High Voltage Power Supply). The ETRO on both units is 25 February 1961. The combination lock on the file cabinet was broken. Action is being taken to install an iron bar across the drawers with a three position combination padlock holding it in place. Retouching the surveillance board and sending the altimeters for re-calibration now is in progress.

Supply:

Personnel manning in the supply section has remained consistent with UMD authorizations throughout this quarter and excluding TDY trips was well manned. During this quarter there were 4 ½ Otter flights and 18 Aztec flights as follows:

October was the last open water shipping month, and five ships stopped at Yellow Beach. The last ship stopping here was the NSV Algerine on 21 October 1960. On 27 November 1960, Mr. Marty Renaud flew into this station for the first time in the Aztec. The Aztec will serve as a backup aircraft for the Otter. This quarter saw the preparation of our 1961 SUNEC requisitions which were submitted to Goose AB. All subsistence items within food services were completely inventoried by supply personnel. The following priority items were processed this quarter: VDP (1-14 days) –2; RNFP (1-14 days) 2; TDIOP (1-14 days) 1.

Civil Engineering:

During the past three months, CEO has been manned by 13 military and 17 civilian personnel as authorized by the UMD. CEO has experienced no overage and only one shortage. The shortage being a 57150, station fire fighter. Presently this position is being filled by a 53250. All periodic and preventative maintenance has been accomplished according to schedule and as required. Picture frames were constructed for all pictures; signs and other directions displayed in the hallways. Butt can supports were made and placed in the hallways for disposing of smoking materials. The electricians connected the circuit in the dining hall fire alarm system which was supposed to be done by contract. Also the electricians performed minor maintenance on the blower system and other utilities in the dining hall.

Morale:

The morale and esprit de corps of the unit remained high throughout the quarter. Radio Station WORM has provided up to date news and refreshing programs. This along with movies and religious activities conducted during this quarter has helped to bolster morale. There were three Commander’s Calls during this quarter.
