Grostenquin France

The Rock Pile

This pile of rocks would eventually be the base for the Fire Hall driveway at 2 Wing.

Road building was another great surprise to the Canadians. A heavy dump truck would drop off a load of large rocks. Then 4 or 5 Algerians would arrive with sleadge hammers and proceed to make small stones out of big rocks. After two or three days of hammering a packer would come along and pack things into a "rough road". Eventually it would be paved but nothing seemed to move very fast at Grostenquin. The rocks in the photo served as a portion of the driveway to the Fire Hall. All of the streets and driveways were virtually made the same way and the only stone or rock crushers I saw in France were "Algerians".
