Excellent spring weather prevails, cool in early a.m. CAVU 75%. Excellent long periods of sunshine, marked absence of cold mist. The two Recreation buildings across from #2 Bldg have been completed regarding the structural steel, roof, glazing and doors. However, the interiors have not been completed. CO conferred with CAdO, W/C JC McCarthy, CTechO, W/C AN LeCheminant, and W/C JF Edwards, W/C Flying, on the programme to be tentatively adopted for the visit of Hon. Brooke Claxton. Miss C Brett of CBC Canada visited the unit and obtained interviews with station personnel.

Excellent spring weather still continues. It is regretted but aircraft serviceability is low and only four aircraft from each squadron able to operate. CO took advantage of excellent weather and went flying in a Sabre. Stocktaking checks being made in Station Store as well as other end month stock checks. Miss Shirley Brett of CBC Staff Montreal completed her interviews of station service and civilian personnel and later departed for 3 Wing. CO attended an informal party in the Little Theatre tendered by the Unit Messing Officer’s staff. Complete and final arrangements completed by unit for the visit of Canadian Defence Minister. F/O’s Gagne, Aitken, Sparrow and Belliveau, 430 Squadron, departed for Paris this afternoon to attend a meeting of the French National Air Association.

Excellent weather prevails. Low aircraft serviceability but every opportunity is being taken to facilitate the flying of every serviceable aircraft. F/O J Eakins, Air Division Welfare Officer visited the unit and discussed welfare problems with F/O E Cox, Unit Personnel Officer. W/C J Griffith, CE of Planning Team in Paris, visited the unit in company with Mr. R Deschamp, who represents the civilian position of this group. They conferred with contractors employed on the base.

Excellent weather still continues. CO flew to 4 Wing to confer with CO of that Wing on the forthcoming visit of the Canadian Defence Minister. A live show was held in the Unit Theatre for personnel.

5 Dec 53

Excellent weather continues. Operation "Snowball" still in effect despite the low serviceability degree of aircraft. A/C KLB Hodson, Chief of Staff Air Division HQ, accompanied by W/C RA Ashman, visited the unit. They conferred with the CO and later with the CTechO, on the static display for the visit of the Minister. An unofficial visit was paid to the unit by A/M JL Plant, Chief of Staff to A/C/M Sir Basil Embry, now Commander-in-Chief, AAFCE, Fontainbleau. He was accompanied by G/C WH Swetman, S/L EJ Groz and F/L PK MacDonnell, all of AAFCE. After a tour of the unit and lunch in the Officers’ Mess, they departed by air for Paris.

Excellent weather, clear and CAVU all morning. In early afternoon it clouded over and by 1700 hours heavy ground fog was evident. Skies remained clear and bright. Fog is heavy with moisture and very penetrating. CO held his regular Monday conference, the topic of discussion being the planning and organization of the impending Canadian Defence Minister’s visit. Visitors from Air Division HQ on official business were F/L D Pope, SOPA, and F/L DL Thompson, Division HQ Matron who is reporting here on a month’s TD to assist in the hospital. F/L G Marion, Medical, returned from TD at SHAPE and AAFCE HQ and resumed his duties in the Station Hospital. An American briefing team comprising Captain AB Kelly, Major RR Hessberg, Major BF Armstrong, Lieutenant JV Watson, Captain HL Anderson, Lieutenant CD Bain, and Lieutenant BA Bray, from USAF Base Spangdahlem, Germany, visited the unit and gave a lecture to unit aircrew regarding fighter pilot tactics, etc. They later departed, after a most interesting lecture, for their parent unit. Messrs Mees, Goldstone and Jacobs from Leeds, England reported in on canteen matters and sales. Mr. J. Goldsmith, Area Representative of the RAF Cinema Corp, (Europe), visited the unit and paid a courtesy call on the CO. A farewell party was tendered F/L GS Clarke, MEO and F/O DC Ewing, Security, in the Officers Mess. They are returning to Canada on repatriation.

Weather very unstable. Brief periods of sunshine but mostly cloudy. Discussions were held by CO with W/C Flying and CTechO regarding their phase of demonstrations on the visit of the Canadian Defence Minister. G/C W Weiser flew in Expeditor 1532 to Trier, Germany, with classified documents for A/C WR MacBrien. F/L LB Pond reported in from Air Division on CE matters.

9 Dec 53

Very unsettled weather. Canadian Defence Minister in Dusseldorf, Germany, awaiting take off for 3 Wing. Considerable complications encountered through inconsistent reports of his itinerary. At 1200 hours it was received that he was being diverted to this unit. This caused last minute rush and hasty preparations being made; which of course proved to be incorrect. Actually a complete dress rehearsal of his arrival was held. Weather conditions improved to permit him to land at 3 Wing, inspect and later depart by road for 4 Wing, where he was a guest at a Mess Dinner. The crew of his North Star captained by F/L HB Russell, arrived this unit for overnight and await his arrival on the 10 Dec. Visitors to the unit were A/C KLB Hodson, C Staff O at Air Division, who conferred with senior officers on last minute arrangements for the Defence Minister’s arrival and reception. The CO attended an informal Christmas party in the Station Theatre given by personnel of SP, FF and Ground Defence sections.

Weather very overcast, rain appears imminent and foggy periods. Final word was received from 4 Wing that the Hon. Brooke Claxton was en route. At 1140 hours the Defence Minister arrived with his entourage which included Mrs. Claxton, A/V/M and Mrs. HL Campbell, Miss Dunn, the Minister’s Secretary and Mr. Paul Marshal, his private secretary, W/C RA Ashman, F/L M Doyle and the crew of Air Division Dakota, captained by F/L W Watson. He was accorded a Guard of Honor, followed by a fly past from the three squadrons on the unit. At the conclusion of the fly past, a briefing was held in the Wing Ops Room by the CO, at which the Minister, less ladies, and his party attended. This was followed by lunch in the Officers’ Mess at which a number of the ladies on the base attended and tendered a private luncheon to Mrs. Claxton and her guests. A static display, scramble of squadron aircraft followed by an inspection of various establishments on the unit. The official party then departed by air at approximately 1500 hours for Metz, (Frescaty), and Paris (Orly). A conference was held by the CO at the conclusion of the day’s routine and was attended by the CAdO, CTechO and OsC Squadrons, at which problems encountered in the official reception to the Minister were discussed and recorded for future action and better co-ordination affected. Heavy fog settled after 1400 hrs causing all Bristol flights to be cancelled. The first Station Variety Show, comprising unit personnel, was held in the Station Theatre. It was well attended and received by all present.

11 Dec 53

Station stood down with a skeleton staff on orders of CO as a reward for the excellent showing demonstrated by all personnel during the Defence Minister’s visit. Many of the unit personnel departed on week end trips to Paris, Switzerland, and other popular winter resorts. Weather overcast, foggy and very damp. CO attended Christmas section parties in Cpls. Club and in the Little Theatre for 430 (F) Squadron.

12 Dec 53

Weather remains unsettled. S/L W Rogers reported in from Air Division HQ to relieve F/L N Bracher, Protestant Padre. A stag party was held in No. 1 hangar at which amateur boxing and wrestling bouts were enjoyed by all.

14 Dec 53

Heavy fog, mist and rain. No flying operations carried out today due to inclement weather. Regular CO’s weekly conference held. Visitors from Air Division were F/L J Bonner, Accounts, G/C E Sharpe, SOAF, W/C F Bowler, SO Maint and Mr. Glover for CTO (Air) Paris HQ. CO paid a visit with F/L RM Wood to Air Division and conferred with the AOC. A live show from US Army sources in Germany performed in the Station Theatre before a large and enthusiastic audience. G/C JB Harvey arrived by air from CJS London and departed by road for Metz.

15 Dec 53

Weather cold and damp. Heavy mist covered this area making flying operations impossible unless with GCA aid. Light rain fell during the day and at 2100 hours light snow flurries. The unit was officially visited by General RM Lee, new Commanding General of 4 ATAF. General Lee replaces General D Strothers, who has been re-assigned. He was accompanied by A/V/M HL Campbell, Air Div, A/Cs WR MacBrien (4 ATAF), F Carpenter (Imperial Defence College), G/C R Stovel, NATO Military Standardization Committee in London, W/C J Woolfenden, W/C R Foster and S/L J Olsen. General Lee was accorded and inspected the Guard of Honour, followed by a briefing in the Wing Ops Room by the Station Commander. He was tendered a luncheon in the Officers Mess at which he spoke to all pilots and expressed his pleasure at being associated with the Canadians. General Lee is a native of the State of Maine. Following luncheon he was conducted on a tour of the unit after which he departed by air for 3 Wing. The spirit usually with this time of the year is becoming very evident, as branches, sections and squadrons arrange and conduct their respective informal parties. Numerous personnel are going to Canada on annual leave as well as numbers going to the UK and places in Continental Europe.

16 Dec 53

Favourable weather. 421 Squadron able to get airborne by 1000 hours. At 1330 four 421 aircraft took part in "Snowball" as interceptors. The mission was successful as GCI vectored them onto the target. With only five aircraft serviceable 421 were able to put in 20 hours flying time throughout the day.

17 Dec 53

Misty and frosty, light snow flurries in early morning, clearing to fine, good visibility and full moon. Lt Col. J de Caix, FLO at Air Division paid a courtesy visit to the CO. Col. de Caix is being replaced by Major R Garlin, who also was present. W/C F Darragh was taken on strength and posted to 416 Squadron as Deputy Squadron Commander. Excellent sales reported in the Station Store. Painting nearing completion in the Snack Bar. Films on intelligence were shown by FL Ehman, Air Div Intelligence Officer. S/L MacKay lectured 416 airmen, and also showed them a combat film. A section of four 416 aircraft were sent up in the late morning on a weather check and reported the weather still below VFR limits. At 1330 four 416 aircraft took off as target on "Snowball" flying close formation. Successfully intercepted. Normal flying was carried out the rest of the day.

18 Dec 53

Heavy fog, frost and mist. Did not clear all day. Flying operations nil. A Bristol freighter arrived in from Langar, no space available for Service passengers as aircraft was loading a Sabre for return for overhaul. Large number of Christmas section parties have commenced and the Christmas spirit prevails. Civilian French children in the surrounding area were tendered a Christmas party in the Little Theatre which was enjoyed by all. Gifts and refreshments were distributed.

19 Dec 53

Fog in early morning but at noon it cleared and weather was very delightful, although cool and invigorating. Some routine flying carried out; readiness section on alert. Exercise "Snowball" still effective and when weather conditions permit is carried out. G/C and Mrs. Weiser were among many who attended a Christmas dinner at Hotel Trautman at Grostenquin, tendered by the Canteen Officers and staff. A most delightful affair and enjoyed by all. Two officers, F/O RH Aitken and F/O RM Cunningham departed for French Armed Forces Ski School at Les Allues, Haute Savoie, for a period of two weeks where they will participate in a regular ski course.

20 Dec 53

Members of the French War Veterans Association from St. Avold visited the unit on a familiarization tour of the installation. They were conducted in groups around the unit by bilingual officers of the unit.

21 Dec 53

Weather very inclement, light rain, heavy mist and fog and light snow flurries. No flying operations carried out. F/L E Williams, CTelO, 1 Wing visited the unit en route back to the UK.

22 Dec 53 to 3 Jan 54

During this period the unit began preparation for the Yuletide season with the exception of the readiness flight. No flying was carried out. The weather was fairly good for the period, commencing with mild and foggy periods and ending with snow and freezing temperatures. A large number of personnel departed from the unit and spent their periods of leave on the Continent or in the UK. The officers served Christmas dinner to the airmen on Christmas day as well as entertaining the Senior NCOs in their Mess. The CO visited all the messes on New Years and extended his greetings. On 1 Jan 54, an official reception was held which was attended by senior officers from Air Division HQ, local French civil, municipal and military dignitaries. The New Years promotions were light, only three officers receiving promotion to higher rank. To S/L – F/L JN Bracher, Prot/Chap. To F/L – F/O GH Tyson, Air/P, 416 Squadron and F/O DC Evjen, Air/P, 416 Squadron.

4 Jan 54

Weather cold, heavy snow fall, roads very slippery and dangerous. Temperature hovering around zero. CO ordered ME units to be dispatched at a minimum outside the unit, and those so dispatched to proceed with caution. One station wagon veered off the road near Hellimer, the total damage amounting to approximately $150.00. CO held his weekly conference. Nothing of major importance pending except visit of Prime Minister in February. Mr. P Scargell, civilian teacher for unit school as well as Mrs. G Lowes were employed as teachers. Regular flight of Bristol aircraft came in from England loaded with personnel from New Years leave. It later departed for 3 Wing and return trip to 30 AMB. F/O AH Aitken, 430 Squadron, returned off ski course at Les Allues. F/O JRG Gagne proceeded over week end for the next ski course. F/L Tyson, 416 Squadron, reported on the IRF Course at Zweibrucken. Weather remains cloudy and cold. Squadrons did not get airborne. Many of the officers began to study in earnest for their qualifying examinations which are coming up this month. Ground crew personnel received on-the-spot training on cold weather servicing and maintenance.

5 Jan 54

Weather continues to be cold, light snow flurries, brief intermittent periods of sun and a slight decrease in cold. Local and routine flying operations were carried out. Mr. G Souhami, French Press Liaison Officer at AAFCE HQ Paris as well as Mr. Paul Marrisett, representing France "Illustration" visited the unit. They were conducted on a familiarization tour around the unit by Capt. R de Malglaive and F/O JJ Stangroom. F/L RL Fullerton reported in on TD from 30 AMB. Miss Ann Lefebvre, civil nurse from Canada employed in the hospital. The existing service nursing staff have been overtaxed with work and it became necessary to employ a permanent civil nurse. F/O Cunningham, 416 Squadron, returned off the ski course at Les Allues. W/C Darragh attached to 416 Squadron until 15 Jan. Biting winds kept most people indoors. Hangar heating system unserviceable for some of the offices and main floor. In the afternoon aircraft took part in area sweeps. In the morning squadron aircraft took part in battle practices at 30,000 feet.

6 Jan 54

Weather still remains cold, slight sunny periods and small snow flurries. Heavy overcast and no flying today. History in the medical field was made today at this unit when Mrs. Lavigne gave birth to twin boys in the Station Hospital. Mrs. Lavigne is a local French National married to a Canadian airmen. She originally came from Morhange and her twins are the first twins to be born in the Moselle in 20 years. W/C K Walton visited the unit and discussed Armament matters with the CArmO. F/L S Hanlon, CJS London, reported in for S/A trip to London and later departed by AOC Dakota for Paris. The sale prices of all PX commodities was raised by approximately 18% effective 7 Jan. F/L J Harrison, Tech/AE and Adjutant to CTechO reported off leave and will be leaving soon for Rabat Sale, Africa to act as Detachment Commander of the RCAF Squadrons who will be reporting on air firing practice. Living conditions are good as compared to last year and heating and plumbing facilities are meeting all commitments despite the rapid decrease in temperature.

7 Jan 54

Weather has improved, much milder. Met reports a warm front coming through which will improve conditions. About two inches of light snow fell during the night. Road accidents have been numerous since the roads have become impossible with sheer ice and snow. Bristol aircraft of 137 (T) Flight out of 30 AMB, Langar, reported in and took on a large number of passengers. No special activities except ordinary station routine. WO2 WD McTavish appeared before the AOC for summary trial which was dismissed. Guard of Honour on a 5 to 1 ratio will commence training on Saturday, 9 Jan at 0900 –10000 hours. Snack bar renovations are gradually concluding and the service will be resumed in a short time at 100% operation. F/L J Harrison proceeded on TD to Air Div to discuss plans for his trip to Rabat Sale, French Morocco, North Africa, where he will be RCAF Detachment Commander of the Air Firing exercises. S/L N Gallagher, Air Division HQ RC Chaplain, paid a brief courtesy visit to the unit en route to 4 Wing.

8 Jan 54

Weather still remains cold, heavy overcast, brief sunny periods and light snow flurries. Normal station routine. Three 421 Squadron aircraft airborne for formation practice in the morning. One Sabre went aloft for an air test. Four 421 aircraft went up to act as target for "Snowball" at approximately 1330. Slight explosion occurred in Engine Test Stand building when compressor became defective and blew off casing. No injuries, no damage.

10 Jan 54

Weather cold and snowing; turning mild and freezing in late evening. Telephone call received from F/O JRG Gagne, 430 Squadron that 41614 F/O Kenneth Irvin Latta of 421 Sqn was killed in an automobile accident on a mountain road at Les Allues, Haute-Savoie, France. Both officers were attending an official ski course being conducted by the French Army and Air Force at Les Allues. F/O Latta was driving down a mountain road with a French officer when the automobile in which they were riding encountered another vehicle and in attempting to pass on the narrow road, the car in which F/O Latta was a passenger went over the bank and fell approximately 600 feet into a ravine. Both occupants were killed. Body received by French locals at Moutiers and taken to local hospital where arrangement were completed for its removal to 2 (F) Wing. Bad telephone connection impeded confirmation of the fatality.

11 Jan 54

Cold, turning mild and roads a mass of slush and water. Heavy overcast and intermittent rain showers. No flying carried out. Plans and preparations being finalized for the burial of the late F/O KI Latta. Body being escorted by F/O JRG Gagne with French Air Force to Born airport, Lyon, on 12 Jan, where it will be met by our ME and brought directly to unit for burial. Board of inquiry appointed with S/L JR Ritch as President, who proceeded to Lyon and Les Allues for inquiry action. Committee of Adjustment appointed with F/L EF Jackson as President, taking action on Service estate of the deceased. CO held his regular conference with branch heads and Sqn OsC. F/L J Harriott arrived from Canada en route to Canadian Embassy in Paris. F/O E Eliason arrived and taken on strength of 416 Squadron. 430 Squadron was given a lecture on seat ejection.

12 Jan 54

Weather still remains cold and unsettled. Usual station routine. The Air Division SOAF auditors, G/C E Sharpe and S/L J McCaig, reported in on duty. F/L L Pond from Air Div SOCE reported in on TD. Flying commenced at 0945 hrs and continued through the day. 430 sorties consisted of hi-level, GCAs and one air test. 430 Squadron also took part in Operation "Snowball".

13 Jan 54

Weather cold, heavy winds and rains, followed by a lowering temperature and freezing. Squadrons participated in Operation "Wittlesham". At 2215 hours the station was subject to a power cut off. The entire station was plunged into darkness until nearly 2330 hours. During this time the electric incubators in the hospital were in use for two premature babies. The power cut off presented a serious situation and it was necessary to arouse the entire station and gather in all the oil heaters available in order to prevent the demise of the infants. This action was done and served as a satisfactory measure until the power returned. The power failure was outside the unit perimeter and heavy rains and winds were in effect when the incident occurred. Fortunately, nothing serious occurred and the infants were out of danger. 430 Squadron commenced flying at 1000 hours as aircraft serviceability was good, flying was at full strength all day. Hi-level, GCAs and air test were the main sorties flown. Squadron also took part in a special Operation "Barrage". 421 Squadron flew 21 sorties. 421 aircraft took part in Exercise "Wittlesham", an exercise to patrol the Rhine.

14 Jan 54

Weather cleared, heavy overcast and cold rains later in the day. The station observed the funeral service of the late F/O KI Latta. Services were conducted in the unit Protestant Chapel with S/L JN Bracher officiating. Following embussing outside the unit main gate, the cortege proceeded to Metz where final service was held and the body interred in the French Military Cemetery at Chambiere, Metz. G/C L Randall and F/L W Couzens represented Air Division HQ and representatives from the American and French forces were present. A fly past in honour of F/O Latta was conducted by pilots of 421 Squadron. Tents installed at 416 dispersal by civilian firm on a test basis. Meeting with 416 Servicing and Repair NCOs regarding maintenance operations was held.

15 Jan 54

Weather remains unsettled. Excessive high winds and rains. No recurrence of building or roof failures such as experienced last winter. 416 Squadron was one year old in formation today and celebrated informally. Classified documents delivered to Air Division by Stn Adjutant on or about 2230 hours. Documents were from 30 AMB. F/L J Davies, Intelligence Officer from 1 Wing, reported and delivered a classified lecture on current topics to aircrew personnel. A heavy wind and rain storm was in force all night, no casualties. The Cpls. Club was broken into by personnel and approximately 16 bottles of assorted liquor and one box of cigars stolen. A similar attempt was made in the Airmen’s Club but this thwarted. Two airmen became involved in an altercation at Saarbrucken which necessitated their removal to base and hospital. F/O Morrice, 416 Squadron, left for the ski course at Les Allues.

16 Jan 54

Weather still remains overcast. Heavy storm visibility wind and rain ensued all night. 416 aircraft suffered a flame out and fire. The pilot, F/O SGJ Telford was removed to hospital for examination, suffered back injuries. S/L EP Wood and F/L CM Campbell were representative guests of the unit at a reception tendered by Major Jean Robert, Mayor of St. Avold. The reception was held in the City Hall. F/O R Heard, 421 Squadron, left for the ski course at Les Allues.

17 Jan 54

Weather cleared slightly. Two drafts arrived in from Canada under escort of F/O LD Boyle and F/O E Cox. They are mostly replacements for tour expired personnel. Mr. J Evans, Assistant Commissioner at Boy Scout HQ, Ottawa, Ontario, visited the unit and discussed the formation of a Cub Pack with S/L JN Bracher.

18 Jan 54

Excellent weather, clear and good visibility for flying. CO held his regular Monday conference, at which unit matters were discussed. Flying operations on a small scale were resumed as about 90% of the pilot and NFL officers were engaged in writing F/Os Qualifying Examinations. The CO underwent a minor operation in the Station Hospital. An informal reception was held in the Offices Mess on the occasion of the repatriation of F/L WW Boissevan, Accounts Officer, (M&I). F/L W Boissevan was presented with a souvenir beer stein engraved with the crest of the three resident squadrons. A full moon prevailed, weather remained excellent all day, clear, cool and devoid of rain, snow and fog. F/O D Gillis reported in to assume duties in the Accounts Section. 421 Squadron flew 22 sorties for 19 hours and 25 minutes today. Squadron now operating from its dispersal area with maintenance and administrative personnel remaining in the hangar. "B" Flight aircraft, took part in simulated air to air firing exercises, sector recce, low level battle formation training and battle formation practising at 40,000 feet. "A" Flight aircraft took part in drogue towing. Operation "Snowball" practice ¼ attacks at 20,000 feet and low level battle formation.

19 Jan 54

Excellent weather, has all the effects of the advent of spring. However, that is still sometime off. All serviceable squadron aircraft were flown today. Excellent flying weather. However, flying operations are curtailed as the majority of the pilots are engaged in writing Qualifying Examinations. The CO held an investiture in the morning and presented some two officers and 12 enlisted personnel with the Coronation Medal. FS HR Hogue was also presented with the Canadian Efficiency Medal. The ceremony was very informal and held in the CO’s office. At the conclusion of the reception the group posed for a photo for the Unit Historical Record. Reporters in from other units have been few today, F/L E Foychuk, SupO at Air Div. CO together with F/L RM Wood of 421 Squadron visited Air Div HQ where F/L Wood was tried summarily by the AOC for an alleged flying offence.

20 Jan 54

Despite an excellent sunset on eve of 19 Jan, the weather today was cold, windy, overcast and heavy rains. No flying due to inclement weather and examinations. Messrs Goldsmith and Izod from Buckeberg, Germany, and representatives of the RAF Cinema Corp., UK, paid a visit to the unit and conferred with the CO on unit theatre problems. CO ordered a board of inquiry into accident to Sabre 19227, piloted by F/O DCG Hogan, 421 Squadron, which occurred on 16 Jan. Reports have it that the front end intake plug was left in on take off, the pilot was airborne for 20 minutes and landed safely. Board composed of W/C JF Edwards, President; and members S/L AB Howell, OC Wing Maint and F/L RC Shannon, 430 Squadron. A farewell section party was held in the Accounts Section for F/L WW Boissevan who leaves on repatriation to Canada on 23 Jan.

21 Jan 54

Cold, rain and slight snow. Roads are an accumulation of muck. Dampness very penetrating but definitely no ulterior affect on station morale. Personnel have become attuned to the French winter with its variable moods. Normal station routine. Miss M Van Steensyl, CBC Correspondent visited the unit and conferred with the CO and was conducted by the unit PRO and his assistant around the unit.

22 Jan 54

Between 0100 hours and 0700 hours the weather cleared radically from cold, wet with light snow to a beautiful day. Long periods of sunshine. Flying operations were resumed with vigor after the F/O’s Qualifying Examinations in the morning. A number of flying hours were chalked up. This has been the first good weather for over six days. G/C and Mrs. G Westead, Air Attaché, Prague, Czechoslovakia, paid a courtesy visit to the base. He conferred with the CO, toured the unit and lunched at the Officers Mess. Miss M Van Steensyl, CBC Correspondent completed her visit and departed for 3 Wing. A dining in night was held in the Officers Mess which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially since a strenuous week was completed by a majority of the F/O’s in completing their qualifying examinations.

WF Bell, RCN, attached CAFIB at NDHQ visited the unit and conferred with WSO on identification matters. G/C JB Somerville, CO, 1 (F) Wing, reported in on TD and en route to Air Div HQ, Metz, prior to AOC’s CO’s Conference on 27 Jan. F/O ER Eggenberger, MEO from 3 Wing reported on ME matters. F/L Qualifying Examinations commenced with approximately 12 candidates sitting. Invigilating being done by S/L DR Cuthbertson, 2 i/c of 430 Squadron. F/O McNee, 430 Squadron left over the week end for the ski course at Les Allues.

Excellent weather still prevails, except that this area of France is gripped in bitter cold weather. High cold winds predominate but flying conditions are excellent and all squadrons are actively engaged. CO flew to 3 Wing to pick up W/C JC McCarthy, who was en route from Canada on leave. Unfortunately, W/C McCarthy’s aircraft was late and landed at 3 Wing in the evening. He proceeded to 2 Wing by ME.

High NW winds, clear skies, excellent flying weather still continues. CO accompanied by CAdO, W/C JC McCarthy, departed by GMT to attend AOC’s COs Conference at Air Division HQ. Following the conference they attended a reception tendered by the AOC at which senior officers and their wives attended. With good flying conditions, all squadrons were actively engaged in local routine flying. Miss Marie Grebenc, correspondent of "Montreal Herald" visited the unit and was conducted on a tour of the base with the unit PRO, F/L EF Jackson. F/L J Watson, OC of FFTU, 3 (F) Wing visited the unit on technical matters allied with Sabre aircraft and conferred with CTechO, W/C AN LeCheminant.

Clear, CAVU but high winds and cold. Heavy snowfall during the evening, all roads impassable and no DND moving except for absolute necessity. Operation "Wittlesham" in effect today. At 1445 hours four 430 (F) Squadron aircraft were scrambled.

Clear, cold and high winds continue. Snowfall excessive but snow removal equipment has cleared the roads to permit ME movements. Trailer residents are allowing water to run in their private accommodation with the result that the water level is below average and a critical heating problem has evolved. Insufficient water available for heating service buildings and hangars. This critical decrease has caused maintenance work to be impaired. A small fire in one of the rooms in BB 19 destroyed some bedding equipment.

Cold weather still continues, temperature 20º F. Clear skies but very high winds. CO held his regular weekly conference at which the CO’s Conference was discussed. Messrs ER Ford and WR Gillingham from Alkit Ltd., London, arrived on the unit on Service and civilian kit supply matters. Messrs Nixon and Barr, Gieves Ltd., London, also visited the unit on Service and civilian kit supply matters. G/C Limbrick, AFHQ, Mr. Deshaw, AMCHQ, W/C K Walton, Air Division, reported on the unit and discussed armament matters as well as inspected unit armament facilities. F/O J Watson, OC FFTU, 3 (F) Wing, visited the unit and conferred with CTechO. ME incidence of accidents still continues. At present eight boards are under investigation are under investigation and a new pick up ¾ ton enroute to the unit from Canada, in transit, suffered an accident in Metz. The increasing cold weather continues and the CO gave the CTechO and OsC Squadrons blanket authority in cease work for their personnel when the working temperature is 30º and below, they may excuse their personnel from work. This refers especially to personnel on maintenance work. 421 pilots practised battle formation at 40,000 feet. Offensive patrols were also flown.

Clear skies but high winds, very cold. The heating system has failed to provide adequate heat and as a result squadrons and sections have had to stand down. Working conditions in offices were bearable. Flying operations were carried out until aircraft went unserviceable and weather conditions precluded same. G/C GD Calbrick, S/L JM Duncan, S/L FM Oakes, arrived from AFHQ and conferred with the CO and SMO on medical matters. They were accompanied by W/C W Laughland, SOMS from Air Division HQ, and F/L T Thompson. The party remained overnight. They inspected unit hospital facilities, St. Avold hospital facilities and sanitary aspects on the unit.

Weather still remains cold, although high winds have abated and temperature has increased a slight degree. Clear skies and excellent flying weather which permitted all squadrons to participate in flying operations. Squadrons practised aerobatics, GCAs, forced landings and ¼ attacks at 15,000 feet. Hangar heating provided by Herman Nelson heaters on the main floor. Most offices without heat during afternoon. Servicing difficulties continuing because of extreme cold. A galaxy of VIPs from AFHQ arrived today. They were G/C R Cameron, DOE, G/C R Weston, DAPS, G/C JK MacDonald, DAPP and first CO of 2 (F) Wing, and G/C J Diamond, DPC. They were briefed by the CO. tendered a luncheon, toured the unit, spoke informally to the Sr. NCOs and conferred with the CO and the visiting medical team headed by G/C GR Calbrick. They remained at the unit overnight. S/L EP Wood, OC 421 (F) Squadron, and F/L DJ Miller, OC Salvage, were detailed as members of a board of inquiry to proceed to San Remo, Italy, to investigate and report into the circumstances surrounding the accident to Beechcraft 1532 on strength of 3 (F) Wing. Aircraft suffered a crash, piloted by F/O R Annis and no fatalities or serious casualties reported.

Cloudy with brief periods of sunshine. High winds have abated considerably and temperatures are slowly rising. Much milder after 1700 hours. During cold period all water systems in trailer sites were frozen and residents forced to carry water from Service buildings. Cold weather also resulted in an increase in ME accidents. Routine flying. Herman Nelson heaters have proven to be of great assistance to ground crews. W/C T Atherton and F/O AB Stirling and F/O DN Martin, branch head and staff officers Ground Defence at Air Division HQ visited the unit and conferred with CO, CAdO, and F/O BO Mayne, Ground Defence Officer, on camouflage, ground defence and anti aircraft training. An informal party was held in the Little Theatre at which Wing Security Officer said farewell to personnel of his branch who are being repatriated to Canada. Bristol aircraft due in for Rabat but at present no sign of it.

Weather overcast, brief sunny periods and scattered snow flurries. Snow fell heavily after 2359 hours. CO held his regular Monday conference, the principal topic of which was the visit of the Prime Minister and official party on 12 Feb. A/C KLB Hodson, visited the unit from Air Division HQ and inspected and discussed arrangements, Guard of Honour, etc, being arranged for the Prime Minister’s visit. He was accompanied by F/L E Herbertson, who checked on the Guard of Honour procedure as well as implementing our guard with personnel from Air Division HQ. S/L E Smith, AFHQ/AUC, Spec/Educ on TD at Air Division visited the unit and discussed school matters with the CO and S/L JN Bracher.

Weather still remains overcast, mild but only brief periods of sunshine and light snow flurries. S/L JN Bracher, Chairman of School Committee and S/L A Smith, AFHQ/AUC/SDL, who is visiting all Wings of Air Division on school matters conferred with the CO and discussed the school situation fully. A meeting is being held for the parents of the school children at which S/L Smith will outline the plans and policy that are going to be placed into effect. Last minute arrangements are being made in all phases of the program covering the Prime Minister’s visit.

Very mild, rain, heavy fog and overcast. Final preparations being made for the Prime Minister’s visit. Nil aircraft flying today as all are being inspected for Fly Past on Friday. Visitors to the unit were G/C CH Colton, AFHQ, W/C F Bowler, and F/L J Reeves, who discussed technical and ME matters with the CO and CTechO. F/L G Nichols from Air Division HQ, SASO branch, visited on operations matters. A meeting was held in the Little Theatre at which S/L A Smith, AFHQ/AUC/SDL addressed the parents of children attending the unit school on education matters. A large attendance was present, the meeting being presided over by S/L JN Bracher, Chairman of the Unit School Committee.

Weather overcast, light rain showers, mild and light wind with brief sunny periods. The unit was bustling with last minute preparations prior to the visit of the Canadian Prime Minister. There were many visitors from Air Division HQ, including A/V/M HL Campbell, AOC, A/C KLB Hodson, Chief of Staff, who with G/C Weiser had a dress rehearsal of the events being staged on 12 Feb. Miss M. Van Steensyl, CBC correspondent from Canada arrived to cover the visit as well as F/O K Cowan and F/L K Roberts of the PRO staff, Air Division. A North Star of 426 Squadron landed in heavy fog after 0002 hrs on 11 Feb with personnel returning from the French Air Base in Rabat. They were en route to 3(F) Wing but due to bad weather were diverted here. A large group of press relations personnel, both Service and civilian arrived from England at 2200 hours and were briefed by the CO. G/C ME Pollard, SASO, Air Division, visited the unit and discussed final plans with CO and CAdO on Minister’s visit. Members of the French Air Force Band from Metz were in attendance at Guard of Honour rehearsal.

Heavy fog, light showers, brief sunny periods in late afternoon. At 0800 hours fog was very dense, visibility about 400 feet and 1/8 mile. With such adverse weather conditions Plan I (Flying) as scheduled for the Prime Minister’s visit was altered and the non-flying programme resorted to. The Right Honorable Louis St. Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada, arrived on the C5 (RCAF) aircraft at 1115 hours. He was accompanied by his official entourage, who formed the main party, that left Canada. The Prime Minister reviewed the Guard of Honour which commanded by F/L GA McInnes. Military music was presented by the 151st Military Band from Metz. After the Prime Minister reviewed the Guard of Honour, the programme as attached was carried out. At the conclusion of the programme, the Prime Minister departed by C-5 for Rouel.

An informal party was held in the Officers’ Mess for W/C JF Edwards, who is returning home to Canada on posting to AFHQ. W/C Edwards was COpsO at this unit and is being replaced by W/C J Foster who was CO of RCAF Station North Bay, Ontario. 416 (F) Squadron personnel going on detachment to Rabat received their "shots" today.

S/L JFR Johnson, GL/P reported in on posting from Canada and will be allocated to 416 (F) Squadron for a period of familiarization. F/O J Eakins of Air Division visited the unit on welfare matters. S/L JN Bracher departed on TD to Wiesbaden to visit sick and make payments to hospitalized personnel at 495th US Army Hospital. CE work party busily engaged in completing renovations to CO’s office. A complete programme is underway and should be completed on 19 Feb. An informal farewell party was tendered W/C JF Edwards by unit officers and personnel in Building 10. Eight 421 Squadron aircraft, 12 pilots and 11 groundcrew departed for Bitburg to take part in Operation "Deadpan".

All squadrons, officers and airmen, have departed by means directed for FAF base at Cambrai, where they are engaged in Operation "Magnaflux". All aircraft with exception of five serviceable units which are remaining here all on detached flying duties. The CO did not conduct his regular Monday CO’s conference due to the fact that the operation took the Squadron OsC away on duty. G/C W Weiser and S/L JR Johnson departed by Beechcraft to Cambrai on a routine visit. They returned the same day.

Excellent weather, warm, slight overcast, clear, long sunny periods tapering to cool and moderate. Hon. Dana Wilgress visited the unit officially today. Mr. Wilgress is the newly designated Canadian Ambassador to Russia. Mr. Wilgress was accompanied by A/V/M HL Campbell, G/C G Newsome, AAFCE HQ and F/L MF Doyle, EA/ACC. On arrival by air, the Ambassador was greeted by the Station Commander, G/C W Weiser. They journeyed to the CO’s office where briefing was held, followed by a tour of the station and various static displays. Following this, a fly past of six aircraft was conducted. Then followed a tour of the messes and institutes and tea in the Officers’ Mess. Mrs. Weiser held an informal tea in the Officers’ Mess for the ladies in the official party. The official party departed by air for Paris. Ambassador Wilgress was accorded a Guard of Honour on his departure.

Light rain, brief sunny periods and overcast with light wind. CO held the first inspection of 2 (F) Wing personnel in No. 2 hangar. All ranks of Cpl. and below were inspected. CO departed by air with AOC and party to pay an official visit to Major General RE Lee, GOC, 4 ATAF at Landstuhl, and official reception at Ramstein. Large ME convoy departed by road for Cambrai to return personnel and equipment on conclusion of Operation "Magnaflux". All squadron aircraft on operation returned safely to base.

Excellent weather, CAVU – cool wind 5 MPH. Today the advent of spring in France is definitely confirmed. Good weather should prevail from now on. CO held his weekly conference. All squadrons have returned from Cambrai and are now ready to commence flying operations at the unit. S/L J MacKay assumes position of COpsO pending the arrival of W/C Foster from Canada. F/L CM Campbell and F/L R Marriott were representatives of the RCAF at the dedication ceremony relevant to the street naming in Metz – "Rue General Leclerc-Hautcloque – Marecal de France", in honour of Marshal of France General J LeClerc. CO and W/C McCarthy proceeded on a routine night flight in the Beechcraft. F/L W Marsh, 416 Squadron departed on leave then to UK for Meteor conversion and DFLS course.

Excellent weather still prevails. All squadrons are actively engaged in flying operations. However, they may in all probability slacken up their flying due to the Operation "Weapons Fire" in Rabat. First squadron to leave for operation is 421. S/L JS Brown and F/L J Bonner returned from TD in Paris at DTO in an Air Division investigation. CO went flying in an F86 today on a routine flight. S/L J MacKay, Acting COpsO, proceeded on TD to Air Division HQ to attend a conference on flying operations. Excellent weather is bringing out softball players who despite the soft ground, are getting into practise slowly.

Weather still remains excellent. A slight haze existed during the PM hours but was of no consequence. Only aircraft on check or test were flown as all being held in readiness and being checked prior to take off for Operations at Rabat on 18 Mar. Routine barrack block inspections were carried out by the delegated officers. CO, S/L J MacKay, Acting COpsO and S/L EP Wood, OC 421 Squadron, departed for 1 Air Division to attend a conference on details concerned in the squadrons moving to Rabat on Operation "Weapons Fire". Excellent weather still continues. All serviceable squadron aircraft of 416 and 430 squadrons engaged in Operations "Barrage". The following VIPs arrived from UK by CJS (L) Dakota on a visit to the unit. The official party was composed of G/C JB Harvey, Chief Staff Officer CJS London, A/C Widows, RAF, G/C RJ Gosnell, Deputy Director Flying Training (Air Ministry), G/C JOW Barley, Fighter Command RAF, G/C KJ MacDonald, RAF Staff College, Colonel CR Boehm, Deputy Army Member, CJS London, Commander SA Clemens, Chief Staff Officer, Naval Division, CJS London, WC WM Middleton, RCAF Operations (Air Defence) Air Ministry. Following their arrival they proceeded to a luncheon tendered them by the CO. Following this they proceeded to Air Division where they were presented to the AOC. Later they returned to 2 Wing where they were briefed on the station activities and organization and operational breakdown. The official party remained overnight at the unit. F/O Copp, 416 Squadron returned from the IRF Course with a Green Ticket. Operation "Barrage" on for one day. No "enemy" contact.

Clear, warm and sunny weather still continues. CO held his regular weekly inspection of unit personnel, followed by drill familiarization. CO departed by Beechcraft on liaison visit to 3 Wing and 4 Wing. He was accompanied by G/C LR Randall, SPSO at 1 Air Division. G/C JB Harvey and party of RAF, CJS (L) naval and military members departed by air for 4 Wing. Prior to their departure they toured the station, visiting the Wing Operations Building, Station Store and infrastructure facilities. Officers’ promotion board was held at which candidates who were eligible were selected for recommendation. CO presided at 1st Year Anniversary birthday cake cutting ceremony for airwomen personnel at this Wing. In the evening an informal Anniversary Party was held in the Airmen’s Mess at which a large number of invited guests and friends attended.

Clear in early morning, slightly overcast in early afternoon and 100% overcast after 1700 hours. Warm, slight wind and enjoyable. Groundcrew of 421 Squadron being detached to Rabat on Operation "Weapons Fire" left by Bristol aircraft today. Weather permitting the first party should be in Rabat, Morocco on or about 2000 hours this date. North Star aircraft for the balance of the groundcrew late in arriving and may retard the operation. Weather reports were at variance and probable rain storms imminent. Therefore, Sabre pilots and aircraft will not be leaving until more favourable weather. Acting CO went on a routine flight. W/C K Walton reported in on TD from Air Division on Armament matters. F/O J LePage from Air Div also reported in on CE matters. Normal station routine. Heavy overcast in early morning to clearing in midday and evening. Sunny and light winds after midnight heavy rains. CO held his regular weekly inspection and routine drill familiarization. Defaulters on CO’s inspection were given an added drill period after 1645 hours. Visitors to the station were F/O J Spinnard, Adjutant 410 (F) Squadron, 1 (F) Wing and F/L R Hyndman, AFHQ/SDL – Air Historian Branch who is doing a series of oils from the Wings in Europe. Balance of pilots, 12, from 421 Squadron departed by Sabre for Rabat to participate in Operation "Weapons Fire". North Star arrived in from Canada and will be loading remaining groundcrew and equipment of 421 Squadron to Rabat. CO attended an informal party tendered by 416 (F) Squadron at Longeville les St. Avold. S/L PL Gibbs and F/O BR Campbell, 430 (F) Squadron flew to North Luffenham this afternoon. They were accompanied by F/O Fraser, 441 Squadron, 1 (F) Wing here on attachment. F/O Fraser flew the instrument Sabre back to North Luffenham.

Early morning was foggy and cleared with clear sunlight and very warm and pleasant. Routine local flying by 416 and 430 Squadrons. F/L Harrison reported in on TD from Rabat Sale, Morocco, where he is a permanent member of the RCAF Detachment who are supervising the Division Squadrons on Operation "Weapons Fire". He later departed by North Star for London. All members of 421 Squadron who were delegated to go on this operation are now located on duty in Morocco. Mr. Matthew Halton, celebrated London commentator for the CBC paid a brief visit to the unit. He was conducted around, briefed and dined by the Acting CO, W/C JC McCarthy. Mr. H Tucker of the Dominion Meteorological Services in Ottawa reported in on Bristol aircraft from London and departed by GMT for Air Division HQ, where he was briefed. Today officially ushered in the first day of Spring and from all indications, this month it will be a most pleasant and delightful summer. Cool and warm days prevail, sports like baseball commencing and general spring clear-up.

A German live show performed in the Astra Theatre and was well received by all in attendance. A very good show was the general opinion. F/L CM Campbell returned off annual leave in Canada and assumed his duties of Stn Adjutant, vice F/O LG Boyle who has been acting Station Adjutant. W/C WM Foster, new COpsO, proceeded to Air Division for interview with the AOC. W/C Foster has also assumed the assignment of PMC of the Officers Mess. With such excellent weather all squadron pilots are literally flying all possible hours of daylight.

Excellent CAVU weather continues. Temperature around 75ºF. All squadrons are actively engaged in flying operations from 0800 hours until 1800 hours. Numerous visitors to the unit on duty were Lt. Col. T. Bond, Canadian Postal Corps NDHQ, Ottawa, who was accompanied by Lt. R. Delziel, Canadian Postal Corps, Air Division HQ. They conferred with the CO, CAdO on unit postal facilities. S/L T Robinson, F/L R Fallis, Air Division HQ reported on TD on unit canteen facilities and station store administration. F/O WM Elie reported in on TD from 4 Wing to assume temporary command as Unit Security Officer in the absence of F/L MA Labrosse who is on TD in Canada. F/L L Cox and F/O W Balfour from 1 Wing conferred with unit CTechO on technical ME matters. W/C F Bowler from Air Division was also in attendance. The first introductory lecture was held by the CO for the Junior Officers Development Training project. A live show performed in the Station Theatre. A large and appreciative audience was present. Softball team practises held and a good turn out present. Present unit tennis courts were found not satisfactory. This will entail their re-conditioning which will delay them being put into use until late autumn, if then.

Excellent weather, CAVU all day. All squadrons actively engaged in flying operations. A trial fire drill was carried out at 416 dispersal area at which a very favourable demonstration was seen. At approximately 1615 hours Sabre aircraft 19255 of 430 (F) Squadron piloted by 42265 F/O GD MacDonald suffered a flame out and crash landed ¼ miles east of Lelling. The pilot was severely injured and later died as a result of injuries at 1700 hrs. A formal board of inquiry was convened of officers from 4 Wing. Funeral arrangement being made for the late F/O GD MacDonald.

The second lecture of Junior Officers on Service Conduct was given by W/C WM Foster.

CAVU. Excellent weather, warm and clear. Temperature in vicinity of 73ºF. Funeral service conducted in Protestant Chapel for the late 42265 F/O GD MacDonald. Deceased accorded a full Service funeral and interment with honours conducted at French Armed Forces Cemetery a Chambiere in suburban Metz. A large attendance was evident. G/C A Spruston represented A/V/M Campbell, AOC, 1 Air Division. A fly past was accorded the deceased by pilots of his squadron. A Gala Nite was held in No. 1 Hangar by the Women’s Auxiliary to raise funds for a playground for the dependent children on the unit. It was a most successful event.

Excellent weather still continues. Board of Inquiry and Committee of Adjustment re fatality of late F/O GD MacDonald well underway and completing their findings. All squadrons actively engaged in local flying. Normal station routine observed. Today saw the opening of the Air Division Fastball League. 2 (F) Wing and Air Division met at 2 Wing for the opener which 2 Wing took with the score 12-10. F/O WP Wagner 421 (F) Squadron assumed position of Wing Test Pilot.

Very cool and windy. Once again the Air Division ball teams invaded our camp. The first game was played by the girls team which the 2 Wing girls took with a score 13-4. The second game of the men’s league was taken again by 2 Wing by a score of 8-3. Word received from the other wings told of the 4 Wing’s victory winning both men’s games and 3 Wing’s victory in the girl’s games. F/L CM Campbell, Wing Adjutant, went to Metz to represent the CO at the unveiling of a monument in honour of General C Mangan, Liberator of Metz and Commanding General of French Colonial Troops in World War I.

Visitors on duty here were Dr. R Rodnick, sociologist of USAF who is here on a project connected with Canadians vs. French regarding maintenance of civil relations. He was assisted by Lt. Delza and S/Sgt R Filion. They were escorted by F/O J Eakins of Air Division. Two civilian representatives of USAFE in Wiesbaden visited the CAdO and discussed our unit caravan organization. Routine local flying carried out. Service personnel passing through en route to other units in Air Division were F/L E Williams, 1 (F) Wing, F/L J Moffett, 1 (F) Wing and W/C J Kennedy of 30 AMB. A draft of replacement personnel reported in from Canada via Paris.

Weather still remains cold and overcast. Brief intermittent periods of sunshine. Local routine flying carried out by the squadrons. AOC, 1 Air Division, A/V/M HL Campbell, accompanied by his EA, F/L MF Doyle, paid an informal visit to the unit. They were tendered a luncheon. Members of the USAF Sociological Analytical Team continued their discussions regarding the problems existing between French civilians and Canadian armed forces personnel in France. This project is most interesting and some of the matters discussed and proposed recommendations could be of great importance in bettering relations with the Americans and Canadians with the general French populace. An informal farewell party was tendered S/L EP Wood ex OC 421 (F) Squadron by the officers of his squadron on his posting to 3 Wing. F/L Newsome, F/Os Hettrick and Thorneycroft of 430 (F) Squadron ferried Sabres over to England.

Weather was still inclement and heavy intermittent rains fell. Nil flying carried out. CO held his regular weekly inspection and parade. An ad hoc committee on financial matters concerning the unit Station Store conferred with the CO and CAdO. Representatives from Air Division were S/L A McCaig and F/L R Fallis. On instructions from CO, necessary to intercept the CAdO at Luxembourg as he is required to report to CO regarding a top level classified conference being held at this unit on 24 May. The long week end brought about a station stand down until 0800 hours Tuesday, 25 May. A mass exodus of unit personnel took place as personnel left by all means for distant vacation spots in Europe and the UK.

Weather clearing but still cool and overcast. Possibly clearing at noon. Station stand down and Sunday routine observed. Abbe E Robin, Cure of Lelling visited the unit and requested ME for children in his parish who were participating in a choral festival at Morhange. CTechO approved and ME ordered.

Weather has cleared after considerable rain and wind on Sunday. Alert squadrons and crews on duty. Regular station stand down in effect for holiday period and Sunday routine observed. A conference was held in CO’s office, presided over by G/C E Sharpe, SOAF, Air Division. The conference was of a classified nature and was attended by representatives from 2, 3 and 4 Wings. Afternoon weather was excellent.

25 May 54

Excellent weather, CAVU, warm and hot. Routine flying in squadrons. As a result of high level classified conference at this unit with SOAF and members of his staff, where preparatory measures were effected to declare worthless at 0500 hours on 25 May all US Military Payment Script and re-issue the new MPC in lieu. Therefore unit personnel commenced at 0500 hours to implement the plan to go into effect at 0700 hours. By 1200 hours the unit was literally "bankrupt" pending the re-issue of the new MPC. This was actioned at 1500 hours and by 1600 hours the complete change-over was completed. Appended are all copies of the various orders, notices, instructions, etc that were issued. F/O W Andrews reported from Air Division and conferred with CTechO re engineering orders. Messrs Stapleton and Staruch of Canadair reported on a liaison visit and will advise on modifications of F86 Sabre aircraft. Mr. Staruch will replace Mr. M Lajuenesse during his three week period of annual leave.

Randim IV Operation concluded at 1705 hours this unit when approximately 45 Sabre Mk Vs arrived from Canada under S/L R Middlemiss, CO, 1 OFU, St. Hubert. He was assisted in the operation by S/L J MacKay, OC 416 (F) Squadron of this unit. AOC, 1 Air Division, accompanied by G/C ME Pollard, SASO, visited the unit and complimented the section heads and officers on the success of their operation. An informal reception was tendered the visiting officers in the Mess. F/L J Brigdin of 3 Wing reported in on flying control familiarization duties. S/L CC Graham, 30 AMB, reported in en route to 4 Wing on Senior Officers Ground Defence Course. CO held his regular weekly staff conference.

CO and Mrs. Weiser, accompanied by F/L CM Campbell, attended as official guest, US Memorial Day Ceremony at US Military Cemetery at St. Avold. Following the service at the cemetery, wreaths were laid at the French Military Cemetery and British War Plot 1914-1918 respectively. An official reception was held in the City Hall at St. Avold at which the CO spoke and expressed his appreciation for the kind invitation to participate in the festivities. At 4 Wing the airwomen’s fastball game was rained out but the 2 Wing men’s team triumphed over the 4 Wing team to the tune of 16-2. F/L Newsome, F/Os Robertson and Roy, 430 (F) Squadron departed for 3 Wing to attend the IRF Course.
