CJS Canadians - Don Norrie

The two airmen from 416 Squadron are John Lee and Des Husband (and myself) on their way to "Old Blightey" for a holiday. These two are both British citizens who enlisted at the "Canadian Joint Staff" (CJS) headquarters in London, England. During the Cold War years, Canada was actively seeking British citizens with prior aircraft technical experience to join the RCAF. Many joined and were posted directly to one of our Wings where they served for a period of 2 to 4 years. Having served their obligatory service some then took their discharge and returned to the UK without ever "setting foot" on Canadian soil. These were a unique bunch having worn a Canadian uniform without ever seeing Canada!! We fondly referred to them as "JCS Canadians". This practice ceased around 1955-1956, and all enlistees at CJS were sent to Canada for training.
