1 Jul 52

Visit by S/L MD Smith from Air Ministry and F/L JA Walters from Fighter Command to discuss the electrical installation of the F-86E aircraft and associated ground servicing equipment.

F/O RJ Conti flying aircraft 19187 failed to return from a GCA practice flight and was reported missing.

Station celebrated Dominion Day on 30 June 52 so that personnel could enjoy the long weekend. Terrific hot day, temperature hovering around 90 degrees. All available pilots proceeded to West Raynham to see air display. OC went along to attend Central Fighter Establishment Annual Conference at West Raynham. Routine flying operations carried out with remaining pilots. F/O Denouden, Potter, Thompson reported in from Canada as replacement pilots. F/L MF Dayle acting as OC and S/L W Gill as Station Commander. Duty crews only on parade as weather too hot.

2 Jul 52

No flying except F/O Johnson went to a disbanded RAF aerodrome to assist a pilot of 439 Sqn in navigating back to base. No sign yet of F/O R Conti who parachuted dived into the North Sea off Flanborough Head yesterday at 1415 hrs. Search parties of the RAF have been busily engaged in trying to find some trace of the missing pilot or aircraft with no success. OC still in West Raynham. F/L Doyle acting as OC and COps O and S/L Gill acting as Station Commander. Sports day and entire squadron stood down. Weather becoming much cooler and more pleasant for working.

Weather changed radically. A cold frost with considerable overcast and high winds has struck the UK. Temperatures dropped from approximately 90 degrees F to 60 degrees F and are continuing lower. Routine flying only carried out.

4 Jul 52

Temperatures still lowering and now reading around 54 degrees. Coldest July period in the past 5 years. Routine flying only carried out. OC returned from CFE Fighter Conference tonight. F/O Conti of 439 Squadron not found and presumed dead. Search and Rescue units of the Royal Air Force have ceased action to affect his recovery. No report.

7 Jul 52

Overcast and considerable cloud with intermittent sunny periods and steady warm SE breeze. Local flying operations carried out. S/L D Warren gave a restricted address covering the various aspects covered at the CFE Fighter Squadron Conference at West Raynham which he attended last week. Air Gunnery exercises being prepared for coming week at RAF Holbeach. Memorial Service conducted for Late F/O R Conti of 439 Sqn in the RC Chapel. F/L HWD Prince, Engineering Officer of 410 Sqn departed on TD for Air Ministry London to attend a Committee meeting on Standardization matters.

8 Jul 52

Overcast, warm with intermittent spurts of wind and sunshine. Air firing exercises held at RAF Holbeach. Personnel consisting of 5 Officers and 10 airmen selected for the AAFCE Air Show at Rheims France on 19 July 52. Squadron promotion board completed and submitted to Wing HQ for review. Wing Commander S Howell AJAG from CJS London visited Squadron and interviewed 2 airmen.

9 Jul 52

Beautiful weather, excellent flying conditions. Local flying and air ground gunnery exercises at RAF Holbeach. CO's inspection waith 56 men on parade. Balance on other assignments, Guard of Honour, etc. Memorial Service held in RC Chapel for late F/O R Conti of 439 (F) Sqn. OC attended and Adjutant were official representatives. F/O R Haran departed by Air for Canada on 38 days compassionate leave. Serious illness in his parental family. Nil flying carried out on afternoon as Squadron standdown for sports. F/O D Broadbent visited RAF Cranwell on air cadet liaison duties.

10 Jul 52

An excellent day, warm. CAVU and light wind. Fighter affiliation with RAF Dedington and Horsham St.Faith. Local flying operations carried out. Two RAF pilots instructors F/L Harrison & S/L Bourne from RAF Oakington visited the Squadron and were checked out on F86E (Sabres). Several pilots and Sqn Adjt were taken on routine flights on Meteor MK 7 aircraft. All reported the aircraft as perfect. S/L D Warren busily engaged in completing investigation to aircraft "A" crash involving F/O Sills of 439 (F) Sqn. Five pilots of 410 (F) Sqn proceeded on TD to RAF Holbeach on target familiarization and gunnery trials.

11 Jul 52

Clear and windy, intermittent sunny periods, cloudy overcast. Personnel selected for the National Air Races at New Castle-upon-Tyne on Fri and Sat. They are S/L Warren, F/O Gibson, F/L Nichols, and F/O Bentham and single aerobatics by F/O Sylvester. OC completed investigation on Sabre aircraft that plunged into sea. F/O Gibson attended Peterborough Police Court at the hearing of LAC G Beer in connection with an automobile case. Local and routine flying carried out. Air Show pilots engaged in practicing flights. Another birth to one of 410 pilots. Mrs. W McEwan, wife of F/O McEwan, has given birth to a girl, weight 6 1/2 lbs.

13 Jul 52

Four aircraft piloted by S/L Warren, F/O Gibson, F/O Bentham and F/O Cinnamon departed from unit to put on fly past at Newcastle-in-Tyne which is sponsored by the Royal Aero Club. F/O F Sylvester also did single aerobatics at the display. From comments received from the spectators who were at the show, the RCAF's showing was most commendable.

14 Jul 52

Overcast and high wind. Routine flying only carried out. OC completing Board of Inquiry. F/L HWD Prince reported back from Standardization Committee meeting at Air Ministry in London.

15 Jul 52

Excellent day, CAVU unlimited. Local routine flying was carried out. Bomber affiliation exercise carried out with RAF Horsham St. Faith. OC went on TD to 11 Gp HQ Uxbridge to discuss Battle of Britain details for the celebration in Sep. Plans being finalized for the Squadron personnel detailed to leave for Reims, France to participate in the air show at that city.

16 Jul 52

Overcast, cold and windy. OC returned from 11 Grp HQ where he attended a conference on Battle of Britain preparation for 410 (F) Sqn. The OC gave a brief discussion on the matters involved. Final plans made for airlift for Reims air display. 12 Gp HQ have finalized all arrangements. No local flying carried out. Officers attended mess meeting and later a lecture on current events in the Station Theatre. Plans were cancelled for a Squadron swimming party which was scheduled today at Northampton. Weather inclement.

17 Jul 52

Mr. DR Ruscoe and party from Kenton Equipment Company demonstrated a BOAC Hydrostatic weighing kit for evaluation, to ascertain suitability for RCAF. Visit by W/C Kearon from Air Ministry, Harrogate to discuss armament of F-86E.

The weather is a little unsettled but does not appear as if it will interfere with F/L Nichols trip to Reims. Three Sabres off successfully with ground personnel leaving in the three Ansons provided. Rain showers intermittently throughout the day. Offices softball game against Senior NCOs cancelled for weather.

18 Jul 52

Weather somewhat better today but containing low ceiling. Eight aircraft are being prepared for the noon escort exercise over Lille. F/O Bain spent morning away checking ME Section inventory. Briefing held for escort at 1000 hours. All aircraft airborne at 1130 hrs.

21 Jul 52

Smashing good weather. S/L Warren and F/O Johnson were held up for a while on their trip to Holland because of fog. The three aircraft returned from Rheims after their four day holiday. G/C EB Hale gave a briefing this morning regarding unauthorized and unnecessary low flying. From now such flying shall not be tolerated.

S/L Foskett from Headquarters Ferry Wing, Andover visited to discuss and obtain information for RCAF training syllibus and task chart for ferrying F-86 Sabre aircraft.

22 Jul 52

Excellent weather, light hot wind, CAVU and then some cloud. Affiliation with B-29 and drogue towing operations as well as routine local flying operations carried out. Arrangements being made for the entire Sqn, 12 aircraft plus 12 pilots and 40 men to go to Ypeburg, Holland and participate in the International Air Show at Holland. This is a large committment and extensive plans being formulated, OC advised CO's conference.

Excellent weather, bomber affiliation exercises with USAF a/c. Normal routine flying operations are carried out. Sports day. Sqn stood down.

Excellent weather, routine flying operations. Nothing of interest to report.

28 Jul 52

A cold frost has settled over England and a rapid drop in temperatures has occurred. Whereas last week the area was basking in hot weather, it this week has resulted to warmer clothing. Routine flying only carried out. S/L D Warren assumed postion of Acting C Ops O in the absence of W/C RTP Davidson. S/L WT Gill assumed command as Acting OC 410 Sqn. Arrangements completed for the move to Holland this week when the Squadron will participate in an Air Display at Ypeburg.

29 Jul 52

Cold, windy and overcast. No active operational flying carried out except routine engine testing in advance of the Holland air display. F/O W Bain reported the remains of the wrecked aircraft in the Wash which appears to be a Sabre aircraft. W/C D Yuile, Wing Commander Flying at Eastern Sector Command Horsham St. Faith reported to the Squadron on a tour of the dispersal area and personal discussions with the OC on operational matters. Squadron stood down in the afternoon to attend Squadron Sport Trials for the Air Field Daycelebrations.

30 Jul 52

Clear, cool, overcast but clearing to sunny periods and slightly higher wind. F/O W Bain investigated area where Sabre a/c was presumed wrecked but water tides are not suitable to confirm indentification. CO's inspection held and 61 men were present on the Squadon parade. Motion pictures of the ranks and insignias of the Dutch Air Force were shown to the personnel who are proceeding to Holland on the air display. All available pilots proceeded to Bourne where dinghy drill, mae west and immersion suit familiarization tests were carried out. Despite the cold water the tests were very successful and aided greatly to the pilots information. Special pay parade held for personnel proceeding to Holland on 31 July. Pilots not engaged in engine test flights were employed in cleaning and painting aircraft for the air display.

31 Jul 52

Clear, visibility 20 miles, warm, no wind. Two aircraft tested for engines. All planes being finalized for air movement to Schoesterberg Holland. One Dakota of the Nederlands Air Force under Warrant Officer Schallentrey and AKIM (Dakota) a/c under Warrant Officer Walchmeiner landed and commenced loading operations. A/C taking airmen and equipment departed at 1300 hrs. and pilots left in a Squadron formation at 1530 hours.

1 Aug 52

All squadrons personnel who were not in Holland on duty stood down. It being a long weekend, work will not be resumed until 5 Aug 52.

5 Aug 52

Weather overcast, warm and rainy. No flying carried out in morning as aircraft being given maintenance and inspection after their return from Holland. Routine flying only carried out in the afternoon. The routine monthly returns being completed. At total of 500:50 hrs logged by the Squadron for month of July.

F/O D Denouden investigating an MT accident. One airman, LAC FR Corfe appeared before OC on several charges which occurred whilst squadron was at Leist, Holland. He was remanded to the CO.

6 Aug 52

Clear, warm and visibility 10 miles. CO's inspection at which the squadron presented a splendid appearance. OC attended CO's conference. Routine flying carried out in the morning and bomber affiliation with B-29s carried out with success. These exercises are of great value to fighter pilots and are excellent for co-ordination and familiarization in combat tactics. Personnel of squadron who indicated their intent to participate in unit Sports Day were busily engaged in practising at various sports. Squadron busily engaged in erecting various flags and pennants which they "obtained" during their visit to Soesterberg, Holland.

7 Aug 52

Dull and overcast with considerable mist in the morning until noon. No flying carried out during the morning. Pilots attended an Intelligence Lecture on Far Eastern Affairs given by Wing Intelligence Officer, S/L Davies. Considerable flying operations such as 1/4 attacks and QGH's were carried out. S/L Gill still acting OC of Squadron and S/L Warren as Acting C Ops O. A heavy thunderstorm blew with much rain at 1600 hrs. One aircraft of the Squadon still in Soesterber, Holland with 1 WO and 6 airmen awaiting the arrival of a pilot to fly it back. Night bomber affiliation exercises held. Heavy rain, thunder storm ensued.

8 Aug 52

Clear, CAVU in AM, warm and excellent flying weather. Routine local flying operations carried out. At 1100 hrs all personnel on the unit attended a very interesting CO's open forum where problems and mutual discussions was held. F/L Sylvester and F/O Denouden departed by Sabre aircraft for Seosterberg, Holland. F/O A Robb also left by Dakota (RAF) aircraft for Soesterberg to fly back the grounded Sabre, awaiting pilot after engine refit. The Dakota will return to 1 Fighter Wing with Officers and airmen who were required to remain in Soesterberg to effect engine repairs.

11 Aug 52

Overcast with rain and intermittent periods in the morning. However, local routine flying carried out. Cpls Hemssed, Maracle and Elkes to report to OC for misdemeanor in Soesterberg, Holland. In the afternoon, bomber affiliation, 1/4 attack raids and routine flying was carried out. Heavy winds blew all day. Flag Staff being erected for flying of pennants which the pilots "purloined" during their visit to Holland.

12 Aug 52

Excellent weather, cool, windy but CAVU. High speed aerobatics and routine local flying operations carried out. To date the Sqn has accured about 165 hrs in flying time. OC attended COs conference. Nothing special to report.

13 Aug 52

COs parade and inspection. Practice Wing Ceremonial Review. Considerable squadron drill completed. Weather was fair, slight overcast, high wind and intermittent rainy periods. Station stood down at 1100 hrs. Unit Sports Day held at which 410 (F) Sqn emerged the winners. It was a great showing and the OC was most impressed. A very excellent Trophy cup was presented to the Sqn and speaks highly for the sportsmanship instilled in its Sqn members.

14 Aug 52

An excellent day. CAVU, very warm. Routine local flying carried out. Flying time rapidly piling up for the Sqn. No wind today and ideal. Sqn engaged in testing balloon defences at various USAF bases; bomber affiliation, with B-29s and fighter affiliation with Vampire a/c. Battle of Britain conference held at Wing HQ at which the flying tactics to be followed were discussed. W/C Holman and G/C Baker of Air Division HQ, Paris visited the Sqn on various matters. It was an informal visit. An informal dining night in Officers Mess of the Sqn in honour of the impending marriage of F/L JG Joy on Sat. 16 Aug. Sqn Promotion Board completed and forwarded to Wing HQ for approval.

15 Aug 52

Overcast and mist until 1000 hrs when it cleared. Lecture held on a/c recognition given by F/O Sylvester as well as visual examination. Routine flying operations carried out such as bomber and fighter affiliation. Arrangements being made for Dieppe Fly-past. Nothing outstanding to report.

16 Aug 52

This was a memorable occasion for the Squadron and worthy of recording for posterity. The first Canadian Officer with 1 (F) Wing who was married in England. F/L JG Joy was married at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church North Luffenham to Miss Dorothy Elizabeth Darke. Both parties are residents of Toronto. A reception was held in the Officers Mess. The parish rector assisted F/L A Littlewood, the unit Protestant Chaplain, in solemnizing the ceremony. Officers of the Squadron presented them with an engraved silver tray.

17 Aug 52

"A" Flight personnel of 410 Sqn were engaged in operations today in an exercise with Western Sector HQ. In this exercise they were providing actual operational plotting and tracing for Royal Observer Corp. Excellent flying conditions existed. F/O R Haran returned off compassionate leave to Canada. During this period he was also married. His wife is remaining in Canada for two months after which she will rejoin her husband.

18 Aug 52

Gale warnings on the wireless. Overcast, rain and very windy. No sunshine. Arrangements being made for Dieppe fly past at 1615 hrs on 19 Aug. Those pilots of the Sqn who flew on the 17 Aug have been granted today off. A number of the Sabre aircraft on the Sqn charge are due in for various periodic checks for maintenance and overhaul. Temporary duty instructions received for F/O FE Sylvester to attend 5 week Intelligence Course at the RAF Intelligence School in Westminster. Nil flying carried out in AM due to inclement weather conditions. Flying resumed in the afternoon. Cloud penetration instrument flying and routine local flying carrie dout.

19 Aug 52

Overcast, high winds, spasmodic rain with bright sunny periods. Air to ground firing practice at RAF Holbeach carried out. Routine local flying. F/O RR Biggar sick in quarters. S/L Warren attended CO's conference at which among many things discussed was a unit wide tightening of dress, deportment and discipline ordered. At 1615 hrs, 12 aircraft of the Sqn participated in a commemoration flypast over Canada Square at Dieppe France. This was in honour of Canada's assistance in theSecond World War to France. W/C W Gordon, RCAF Staff Officer attending RAF Staff College visited the OC S/L Warren on an informal basis.

20 Aug 52

Overcast but clear, considerable wind with rain. CO's parade and another practice Wing Ceremonial parade in advance of CAS visit on 5 Sep. Routine flying for engine tests carried out. Sports Day for those of Sqn who could be spared. Nothing unusual to report. F/O Bain and F/L Morris made a routine flight to USAF Stn Brentwater. A general tightening up of dress, deportment and drill being made.

21 Aug 52

Excellent clear, warm day with slight ground haze. Routine flying carried out. Aircraft of Sqn participated in Meteor affiliation during the day. OC S/L Warren visited RAF Waterhead at 1900 hrs. Aircraft of the Sqn also participated in B-45 affiliation. Nothing other than the chance info to report. W/C Spruston, S/L Rosenthal, and S/L Brown attended a meeting in London with Mr. Ross, Assistant Deputy Minister of National Defence regarding quarterly financial payments to the RAF.

22 Aug 52

Excellent weather CAVU. Routine flying operations carried out. Bomber and fighter affiliation. Results of air-ground firing tests back from Holbeach show improvements. F/Os Potter, Know-Leet and Bain leading in number of hits. Sqn slowing down in flying as they have passed the 400 hrs period for this month. Other Sqns are considerable lower, in fact nearest to our total is 85 hrs in arrears. Serviceability high for the month. S/L Parker from CSE Watton (RAF) visited North Luffenham to assess practicability of future fitting of certain radio equipment in the Sabre 2.

25 Aug 52

F/L JH Spratley returned from a one week course on fuel systems. This course is provided by the Lucas Company of Burnley Lancs. An excellent day. All personnel of the Sqn who were selected to participate in the Battle of Britain Fly Past were engaged in routine practice formation flying. One of these pilots F/O RK Johnson in Sabre suffered a flame out and made a forced landing in south Luffenham Village. He was only slightly injured. The aircraft suffered an "A" category crash. Also engaged in one of these formation flights was F/O G Cinnamon who during a manoeuvre found his aileron controls had become locked. He made an excellent landing using only his rudder controls. This feat was most commendable. Personnel engaged in cleaning up the Sqn site, arranging walkways and insignae prior to the arrival of the CAS. Excellent flying weather prevailed and Sqn willingly took advantage of good flying conditions.

26 Aug 52

W/C Irons of Air Ministry visited this unit to discuss Sabre maintenance problems. Dark and overcast, hazy and poor visibility. Pilots engaged in aircraft recognition and examination. Visibility improved around 1100 hrs. and routine flying carried out. SMO will not permit anyone into the hospital to see F/O RK Johnson who force landed in Sabre 19178 yesterday. From reports he is resting comfortably and is being removed to a Hospital in Peterborough for examination by Specialist in X-ray technology. All pilots who were selected for Battle of Britain fly past were briefed at 1430 hrs and with other pilots of 441 and 439 took off under G/C EB Hale to fly over the route on a practice flight.

27 Aug 52

Excellent weather, no flying carried out as Sqn has reached its objective. CO's Parade for ceremonial review practice. Drill instruction by F/L Lewis given to all unit Officers. Personnel engaged in painting and cleaning up the Sqn site. Officers attended a mess meeting. In the afternoon, Sqn Adjt attended conference in OC 439 Sqn office re posting of personnel from the 3 Sqns to 2 (F) Wing in Metz, France. Pilots of 3 Sqns proceeded to Nottingham where they received practical instruction in dinghy training.

28 Aug 52

Another excellent flying day. Routine formation flying carried out. Those selected for Battle of Britain fly past were engaged in a practice fly past. F/O CM Campbell, CD Adjt of the Sqn SOS on posting to 2 (F) Wing HQ Grostenquin, France as Adjutant.

29 Aug 52

Fine flying weather today. Cine-flag exercise were carried out along with several low level interceptions. August has been our best flying month to date with over 560 hours which is a new Station record.

439 (F) Sqn - Total hours for the day 13:20 hours. 5 aircraft are serviceable. 20 pilots available. COs parade was held and a practice for the CAS's visit.

2 Sep 52

Total hours for the day 25:15 hours. 7 aircraft serviceable. 15 pilots available. 9 aircraft took part in practice Wing Formation (Battle of Britain). 4 pilots visited Farnboro Air Show.

3 Sep 52

No flying. AM Curtis visited the Station. Parade and flypast were cancelled due to poor weather. 4 Pilots visited Farnboro Air Show.

4 Sep 52

Total hours for the day 17:55. 13 aircraft serviceable. 15 pilots available. A/C Cross, Eastern Sector Commander visited the Station. F/O Wingate in Sabre 19191 while leading a Sqn formation was unable to pull his aircraft off deck on take-off. He applied full brakes and came to a stop on the grass at the end of runway 26, tires and brakes completely burned off aircraft. (Good Airmanship). Four pilots visited Farnboro Air Show.

Exercise commenced 1000 hrs. Stood down at 1800 hours. Neatishead captured by paratroopers. 16 a/c serviceable. 16 pilots available. Total hours 23:45. An aircraft from 416 Sqn of Operation Leapfrog 2 force landed on the aerodrome, engine trouble. Landed far too fast and overshot end of runway. (2 miles). Very lucky to escape uninjured. Aircraft a complete write-off. Flying Officers Wingate and Bedard returned from their duties as Liaison officers on Operation Leapfrog 2.

Exercise Ardent continued, at readiness from 0630 to 1900 hrs. 16 pilots available. 16 a/c serviceable. Total hours 37:15. The exercise continued successfully, the only hitch being that too many fighters were attacking the so-called bomber force (Many near mid-air collisions.) F/O Tommy Wilson returned from his duties as Liaison Officer on Operation Leapfrog 2.

Wing debriefing at 1000 hours on exercise "Ardent". Discussion of R/T Discipline, and general errors made in the air during the exercise followed. In the afternoon films where shown in the intelligence library on aircraft recognition. There was no flying. F/O's Wheeler and Seitz attended Ground Defence Training.

General flying all day. W/C Bird-Wilson (RAF) of CFE checked out on the Sabre with 441 Squadron.

12 aircraft serviceable. 16 pilots available. At 1000 hours the CO's open forum was held in NAAFI, all personnel attending. At 1330 hours all pilots gathered in the Wing Briefing Room to hear lectures on AICM gun sight by members of Operation "Firebird". F/O Sills visited Leconfield for a static display of re-arming the .5 guns. a/c 19205.

S/L Bricker, F/O Seitz and Gregory left for #2 Wing in the Expeditor, to complete investigation of a flying accident. At 1100 hours four aircraft made low level strafing attacks on USAF airfields in East Anglia, as requirded by operation orders. Two air tests were also flown.

Nineteen sorties were flown today on air-to-ground firing at Holbeach range. F/L Kelly took a Sabre to Chilbolten to see about a forthcoming flying display at Salisbury in which he is to demonstrate the Sabre. F/O Ronaasen is back to work from his leave and honeymoon.

22 Oct 52

No flying today. The morning was taken up by trade advancement for the airmen, while the pilots studied for the forthcoming promotion examinations. The afternoon was devoted to sports.

23 Oct 52

Two exercise were flown today. A wing of Meteor 8's from Linton-on-Ouse patrolled the Humber River while Northern Sector GCI vectored the Sabres on to them at 15 minute intervals. This was meant to simulate the type of combat which has been found in Korea for the past year or so. The morning exercise was very successful. The afternoon exercise was less successful. Six aircraft from 441 were led by F/L Walker and patrolled the river at 35,000 feet but the only real contact was by 439 Squadron with 8 Meteors. During the afternon a lecture on service knowledge took place.

Thirty three sorties were flown by 441 Sqn with a total of 30:35 hrs. Two week flying total 111:05 hours. 439 Sqn had ten aircraft serviceable, 21 pilots available. Total hours 41:10. W/C Bird-Wilson, RAF, checked out in an F-86.

The morning's flying was washed out due to a violent cold front which passed through. The morning was spent studying for promotion examinations. F/L Bliss and F/O's Fowler and Wingate attended Ground Defence.

Weather below limits until 0930 hours at which time four aircraft got airborne on cloud flying exercises. During the course of the day films were shown in the pilots room including a very good one on rocket propulsion. At 1700 hours all Squadron Officers gathered in the Officer's Mess to wish S/L MacKenzie "bon voyage" before he leaves for his tour of duty in Korea. A very successful "smash" was held and the Squadron CO was presented with a "Silver Fox' pen and ink stand by the officers.

CO held his weekly parade and a practice Ceremonial Parade in preparation for Lord Alexander's visit.

30 Oct 52

F/O Seitz flamed-out prior to take-off. F/O Sills lost both drop-tanks over Wittering. F/O Gildner damaged elevators on aircraft 19190 while taking part in a tail chase. Upon this aircraft being inspected it was found to be suffering from metal fatigue. All station aircraft were immediately grounded and a special inspection ordered.

General Squadron flying carried out. F/O's IR McDonald and Jolley flew to USAF Bentwaters, returning later in the day. F/L Kelly flew two trips on a Meteor 8 which W/C Bird-Wilson had brought in. In return, W/C Bird-Wilson flew as a number 2 on a formation trip with our Squadron. A record days flying was achieved when 50:05 hours were flown by 439 Squadron.

Aircraft serviceability low, five aircraft grounded for unserviceable radomes and one or two grounded after inspection of the elevator assembly. A first class flying day with not a cloud in the sky and several high-level navigation trips were flown. F/O Raymond left for Canada on thirty days leave.

General flying exercises were carried out. Flying ceased at 1430 hours as an approaching warm front gave us continuous rain.

5 Nov 52

Commanding Officer's parade cancelled due to inclement weather. During the morning air recognition and intelligence lectures were held. Stand-down for the afternoon.

General flying carried out until 1200 hours at which time the weather dropped below limits. No. 2 Wing encountered several difficulties and prangs in attempting trip from France to North Luffenham. No one hurt. (4 aircraft written off).

7 Nov 52

General flying. Pilots had trouble with 25K crosswind. F/O Sills left runway, nose wheel steering failed on 19190. F/O Wheeler blew tire on landing on 19199. At 1130 hours F/L Kelly and F/O McIlraith took off for Royal Air Station at Culdrose, returning later in the day. A farewell party for F/O Tommy Wilson was held in the mess and a good time was had by all.

F/O Ruecker gave a lecture on theory of flight and preparation for promotion exams. 441 Sqn had the Holbeach air-to-ground range for the day but only six trips were flown before the weather clamped at the range. F/O's Neilson and Jolley flew to RAF Station Leuchars in Scotland, returning late in the day.

Flights consisted of practice formation and preparation for Lord Alexanders visit. At 1300 hours F/O Gaudry had a bit of a prang on landing. F/O Gaudry was not hurt.

CO's parade at 0830 hours. The parade was a practice ceremonial show in preparation for the visit of Field Marshal, the Earl Alexander of Tunis, on 14 Nov 52. F/O Len Fine and F/O Ken Branch from 413 Squadron reported to 441 Squadron. F/O Ruecker gave a lecture on Theory of Flight. F/O Fowler lectured on intelligence and counter espionage.

13 Nov 52

Further formation practice for Lord Alexander's visit and a low level straffing attack was made on American Aerodromes. F/O Hamilton scraped wing tip and drop tank on landing a/c 19203. F/O R Haverstock visited RAF West Raynham returning later in the day.

14 Nov 52

439 Squadron intercepted Lord Alexander's VIP A/C at Bedford and escorted him to North Luffenham. The Squadron continued to fly overhead as Lord Alexander took the salute from the remaining Squadrons of the wing. Lord Alexander attended the mess for lunch where each pilot of the wing was introduced. Following lunch, the 410 Squadon Aerobatic team put on a display and F/L Kelly of 441 put on his usual flying show. Lord Alexander departed 1600 hours.

Scattered snow showers over the drome all day. The first three aircraft from 441 Squadron to become airborne ended up landing at USAF Sculthorpe, returning later in the day. Lectures by F/O Fowler on Navigation and Intelligence. F/O Sills on Meteorology.

F/O Cheesman lectured on engines, F/O Campbell on GCA. Films of '51 Grey Cup finals shown in Intelligence Room. W/C Bird-Wilson (RAF) arrived in a Meteor aircraft and flew tow trips in the Sabre. On his second trip he landed at West Raynham where the aircraft went unserviceable. F/O's Villeneuve and Brine checked out in the Meteor 8 and F/O Brine landed at West Raynham to return our Sabre.

Four sorties and a test flight were flown today by 441 Sqn. The sorties were flown in conjunction with a low level strike at three targets in East Yorkshire county; our Sabres attacking an army camp and two radar stations. Four aircraft from 439 and 410 Squadrons also took part in the exercise. Intercepting forces consisted of RAF Meteors.

General squadron flying carried out. Officers attended a lecture on this year's F/O's examinations. F/O Jennett visited Langtoft, a GCI station. F/O's Wheeler and Fowler did a long range navigation trip to Cherborg, Paris and lunched at manston. Lecture by F/O Mac Keracher on instruments.

25 Nov 52

At 1050 hours a section of eight aircraft from 441 Squadron plus four from 410 Squadron were scrambled on an interception against Meteors of the Horsham Wing. The interception took place over East Anglia at 35,000 to 40,000 feet and a very good battle took place with about 12 Meteors before our aircraft returned.

Four aircraft flown by F/L Kelly and F/O's Neison, Ecker, and Simmons left today for Wunstorf and Munich at 1100 hours. Dry dinghy drill in the flight room followed by a Survival film.

Immediately following Met briefing all pilots attended a lecture and demonstration of the Sabre seat ejection mechanism in number 2 hangar. The lectures gave an insight as to just what happens when one "pulls the handles" and procedures to follow when removing a pilot from a crashed aircraft.

A very clear day and Squadrons flew several high level formation trips. During the day 4 trips using cine-gun on a drogue were organized. At present, two Squadron pilots are visiting the GCI set up at Langtoft every day for general information on ground controlling.

A weekend snow fall followed by a thaw and freeze left the runways too icy for flying during the morning. Trade paper lecture by F/L Wenz. F/L Kelly gave the Squadron a talk on the necessity for strict air discipline. Flying began at 1400 hours. A/C Ripley, AOC Transport Command visited North Luffenham regarding air transport problems.

2 Dec 52

Heavy fog put our aerodrome below limits until 1300 hours. An attempt was made to begin flying but poor visibility and ice on the runways allowed only 9 sorties to be flown. Lectures and films in Intelligence Room during the morning. F/O McIlraith is at present on Temporary Duty at Newton where he is coaching the RAF Basketball team.

3 Dec 52

There was no flying today. Films were shown in the pilot's room on air progress and dinghy drill. Many pilots were employed today on station duties; inventory and stock checks, etc. Station stand down in the afternoon.

A very good day. At 1000 hours a section of 4 Sabres did a low level strike on USAF aerodromes at Sculthorpe, Mildenhall and Lekenheath. Night flying commenced at 1645 hours. Mr. Wallace and Mr. Barnes from Air Ministry visited 1 (F) Wing to study ground handling equipment.

Weather fairly duff until 1100 hours. General flying carried out until 1730 hrs. F/O Branch, while practicing simulated forced landings, experienced loss of power on final approach and landed short. Aircraft seriously damaged.

News reached here today that S/L McKenzie is reported missing following air operations in Korea 5 Dec 52. Limited flying. The Hon. Brooke Claxton and AVM Curtis visit cancelled due to heavy London fog.

9 Dec 52

At 1030 hours the Canadian Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Brooke Claxton, and the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshall WA Curtis visted our base and met Squadron pilots. At 1300 hours cocktails were served in the Officer's Mess. AVM Curtis bid the Wing farewell as he will be retiring in January. AVM Curtis stated that although this Wing may not proceed to the continent until early 1954 many trained personnel would leave this Wing for other units. F/L Valentine from Air Ministry gave a lecture on various asp\ects of escape and evasion.

10 - 11 Dec 52

Eight pilots stood by at readiness for a Meteor interception which failed to come off due to finger trouble at Neatishead, the controlling centre. Flight magazine took air-to-air photos of aircraft in various types of formations. Mr. Maskell, Canadair Field Representative for Bristol Aeroplane Company, visited this Wing regarding Sabre spares and to discuss elevator failures.

12 Dec 52

Several sorties were flown on a low level cross-country taking in the area south of London. Trip to Grostenquin cancelled. Three airmen and equipment from 1 (F) Wing proceeded on TD to Prestwick Airport to assist RAF in receiving Sabres from Canada.

13 - 14 Dec 52

Weekend. No flying. 439 Squadron entertained the orphans at Leicester. The party was a great success with 105 kiddies.

15 Dec 52

Very grim weather. No flying. Lectures by F/O Smiley on History and by the North American Reps on the F-86. Mr. Clarke of Aeroplane Magazine arrived for four days during which time he completed extensive drawings of the Sabre aircraft.

No improvement over yesterday's weather; no flying. Lelctures by F/O Smiley and North American Reps.

18 Dec 52

A very good flying day. Air/air cine programme being continued with aircraft equipped with gun sight recorders. F/O Bedard had gear trouble. F/O Wingate had the port brake lock on takeoff. F/O Fowler dragged a wing tip in effecting clearance.

19 Dec 52

No flying. At 1000 hours Mrs. MacKenzie visited the pilots room before boarding a North Star destined for Canada. Santa Claus (F/O Gregory) visited the children's Christmas party at the NAAFI. 405 kiddies attended with their parents. F/O Everard returned from West Raynham, a successful graduate of the instrument course.

F/O's Brine, Villeneuve, Atherton and McIlraith on "standby" for "Fabulous" at 0730 hours with local visibility down to 100 yards in fog. At 1530 hours there was an improvement in local weather and permission was granted by Eastern Sector to fly "Fabulous" section on practice interceptions. F/O Smiley lectured on Canadian History. F/L Davies, Intelligence Officer, was welcomed into the RCAF from the RAF.
